Introduction

Islam is one of the world’s major religions, with around two billion followers. At the heart of Islam are five basic duties that every Muslim tries to follow. These duties are called the Five Pillars of Islam. They guide how Muslims live their daily lives and connect with their faith.

1. Shahada – The Declaration of Faith

The first pillar is the Shahada. It means saying and believing in the sentence: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Mohammad is the Messenger of God.” This simple sentence shows a Muslim’s belief in one God and in the Prophet Mohammad , peace be upon him, as His final prophet. Saying this with belief makes someone a Muslim.

2. Salah – Prayer

Muslims pray five times a day. This is called Salah. They pray at dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset, and night. Each prayer is a chance to stop and remember Allah. All Muslims from all over the world face the city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia when they pray. These prayers help bring peace and discipline to their lives.

3. Zakat – Giving to Charity

Zakat is a way of helping others. Muslims who can afford it give a small part of their money to those in need. This shows care and responsibility for the community. It helps reduce poverty and brings people closer together.

4. Sawm – Fasting in Ramadan

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. This means they don’t eat or drink during the day. Fasting teaches patience, self-control, and empathy for the poor and hungry. At night, families and friends gather to eat and pray together.

5. Hajj – The Pilgrimage to Mecca

The last pillar of Islam is Hajj. It is a special journey to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Every Muslim should do it once in their life if they are able. Hajj happens once a year and brings Muslims from all around the world together. It is a powerful experience of unity and faith.

Conclusion

The Five Pillars of Islam are important because they help Muslims live good and honest lives. They teach Muslims how to pray, give to others, be kind, and remember Allah every day. By following these pillars, Muslims feel closer to Allah and learn to care for the people around them. They help build strong families, kind communities, and a better world for everyone.

Reading Tips: How to Get the Most from This Book

Read for meaning. Focus on understanding the main ideas rather than every single word. Encountering unfamiliar vocabulary is normal — use context to help you interpret meaning.

Keep a steady flow. Try not to stop too often. Reading continuously improves comprehension and helps you follow the development of ideas more naturally.

Listen and read together. Use the audio version while reading. This strengthens understanding, improves pronunciation, and develops your sense of rhythm and intonation in English.

Read regularly. Short, consistent reading sessions are more effective than occasional long ones. Re-reading sections you enjoy can further reinforce learning.

Engage with the text. Think about what you read. Asking simple questions and reflecting on ideas deepens comprehension and improves retention.

Extensive Reading Program - B1 Level

The Extensive Reading Program helps learners improve their English step by step, from level A1 to level C2. At the B1 level, learners read texts that are longer and more detailed. They learn to understand the main ideas as well as important details, and they begin to think more carefully about what they read. This helps them express their ideas more clearly and with greater confidence.

Regular reading is essential for building vocabulary. For this reason, the books, articles, and stories in this program are carefully designed to include useful words and expressions appropriate for B1 learners. This allows students to expand their vocabulary naturally while engaging with meaningful and interesting texts.

Learners can use this program independently or with the support of a teacher in the classroom. The clear level structure helps students follow their progress, recognize their improvement, and continue developing their English through regular reading.
