Finding the Perfect Starting Point for Your Child

Use these tips to create a positive and effective reading experience, ensuring your child finds joy and success at every step.

Identify Their Level: Start with one of our placement tests (EPT or EMT) to identify your child's current proficiency level. Knowing their starting point is key to selecting books that are challenging but not frustrating.

Let Them Choose: Once you know their level, explore the Reading Program together. Allowing your child to choose books based on their own interests (animals, adventures, fairy tales) dramatically increases their motivation to read.

Read Together: Make reading a shared activity. Spending even 15-20 minutes reading with your child daily builds strong bonds and establishes positive, lifelong reading habits. Take turns reading pages aloud.

Talk About the Story: Boost comprehension by discussing the book. Before reading, look at the cover and guess what it's about. During reading, ask "What do you think will happen next?" Afterwards, talk about their favorite characters or parts of the story.

Establish a Routine: Consistency is crucial for progress. Encourage your child to read on a regular basis, even if it's just for a short time each day. A consistent routine makes practice a natural part of their day.

Re-read Favorites: Don't discourage re-reading! Every time your child reads a beloved book, they build fluency, speed, and confidence. It's a highly effective way for them to master new words and sentence structures.

Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge their effort and celebrate their achievements! Finishing a book or mastering a new word is a big accomplishment. Positive reinforcement fosters a love for learning.
